Goo.gl ransomware virus

What is Goo.gl Skype spam

Skype Goo.gl is a Trojan that infects your computer, and uses your Skype and sometimes even Facebook to distribute itself. In fact, we don’t know how the virus is actually called, as people call it by the name of the Google feature that it uses to spread over the users’ computers. It doesn’t actually infect the Skype accounts, as it infects the computer itself, and when you log in your Skype account – you grant the access to it for the virus.

As it often happens, scammers use the free Google service, made to shorten the URLs, which is called Goo.gl. You might have noticed that some URLs, especially the ones, leading to images or other files, stored on the websites, are too long. They may be three type-bars long, and if you want to post them somewhere (on Twitter, for instance), you might have troubles with it. Goo.gl compresses such URLs (and actually any URLs) to a considerably shorter string of random symbols which always start with Goo.gl. This is very convenient to those who post many lings on a regular basis, but this function is also very convenient for Web-scammers of all sorts. Guess why? You’re right because with the use of this service you just cannot see what the link is until you click it.

Will you click on the link, like www.wewannatakeallyourmoney.hack, or www.qwlkjfauh123is874sqajhd.scam, or something even more suspicious? Of course, you won’t. With the use of Goo.gl service, these links will look way less disturbing, and you’ll realize that you got phished only when the website will load in your browser, or when the download of some virus will start.

How Skype Goo.gl virus works

The Skype Goo.gl virus works exactly like all other Trojans: it gets into the system in bundles with some free programs, or vie the corrupted link, and establishes in the system, starting to fulfill its goals. In this case, its goals are to get full control over victim’s PC and to spread more, using Skype and Facebook messages. Scammers don’t even bother about making the algorithms a little bit more complex and adding some actual text into the messages. The virus just posts the Goo.gl link to all your contacts, and if anyone opens it – he will get his own little Trojan. Possible, you were infected by Goo.gl virus in this way. That’s how the spreading system works, but what are the real goals? Let’s figure this out.

Skype Goo.gl is a common Trojan, which employs the unusual ways of distribution, but its tasks are good-old, known from the very dawn of the Internet:

  • Trojans are often used to spy on users or to steal their data. There are lots of information that could be stolen and sold to hackers or advertising companies. For example the list of your contacts, your browser history, your logins and passwords for the most popular mail services, social networks, etc. Trojan also can literally spy on you, using the microphone or a web-camera, if they’re connected to the PC (or if you use a laptop).
  • Another feature of Trojans is that they make your computer vulnerable to other threats. If Trojan is in the system, it can modify its settings and download a dangerous virus, such as ransomware.
  • Some Trojans are made for one purpose – to download and install a stealthy crypto-currency miner that will launch each time you turn the device on. It will slow the computer down, make your CPU and GPU work themselves to death, and significantly increase your electricity bill, to mine some Bitcoins for hackers.
  • Another gift you can get from a Trojan is not the most dangerous, but surely, the most annoying. Scammers can use your PC for spamming or DDoS and other illegal purposes. You won’t even notice the process itself, but the consequences will be obvious: you’ll get captcha every time you type something in any search because the search engines will know that your computer is somehow related to spam. If you don't get rid of such Trojan in a few days – search engines will literally refuse to work, stating that they noticed an unwanted activity in your subnetwork, and you have to wait for some time. It will be a long time, trust us on this.

These are the most popular tasks that Trojans perform, but there are many more. Each and every one of these features is dangerous, and you should clean your PC before these schemes start to work.
